This vacuum is really stylin'. When you use it you feel like you are the housekeeper at the fanciest hotel :) So beautiful. However after buying it we decided not to get rid of our old vacuum cleaner (a Sharp from 1996) because the Hoover does not do as good a job and is kind of a pain to use. First, the self-propelled feature does not work consistently. When you first turn on the unit and start vacuuming, pushing it forward is very difficult, like there is something keeping it from moving forward. After a minute or so, the self-propel feature kicks in and it starts wanting to go by itself, so pulling it back (all vacuuming, for me, is a back-and-forth motion) become like a fight with the unit. Second, it just does not pick up much. Our house is hardwood with large area rugs, and our Sharp does a much better job on the rugs. Third, like other reviewers have said, there is no hose so if you see a dust bunny or cobweb in the corner, you can't get it. You have to go get the canister unit. So basically you are vacuuming your house twice whereas with most other vacuums you'd just do it one time and get everything with a single appliance. We were concerned about the bag getting a musty odor since we do live in Georgia and apparently in this climate the vacuum cannot be stored inside a closet. This turned out to be a non-issue for us because we have it proudly displayed in our guest room, out in the open since it's really lovely. But it is a decoration rather than a functional vacuum cleaner.
The canister unit is handy, but also has a number of issues. 1. You really do have to put it on your shoulder to use it since the hose is too short to leave the unit on the floor. I have neck problems and so this is an issue for me. 2. When it is on, it is very loud and requires ear protection if you are going to be using it for a while. 3. When on, it emits a strong, unpleasant plastic odor that has not gone away after many hours of use. 4. There is no place to store the cord and hose so you basically have to throw it all into a jumbled pile into the closet to store it.

I read all reviews and was somewhat confused by the wide range of ratings. Finally bought it at the last second for Christmas and it has been a huge hit with my wife (no, this wasn't her only present. She had been after me for a new vacuum so I wrapped it and put it under the tree for added volume).
My 2 cents.
1) It cleans carpet very well. We love the handy button switches within thumbs reach on handle. High speed is mostly for short nap carpets. We have a multi level shag and the deep portions are very tall for carpet. On high speed, vacuum sucks down on carpet with such force, it is difficult to maneuver. Low speed is fine and seems to really clean the carpet.
2) We were used to a top of the line self propelled 'Wind Tunnel' and love the lightness of this unit. It isn't self propelled but is light enough that we don't miss it (no transmission to go out; BIG PLUS) Quieter the than Wind Tunnel.
3) At first we were disappointed with no on board tools but then realized that this was one reason for the overall lightness of unit. We normally vacuum the same house (ours) and pretty well have the routine down. Now instead of stopping every few minutes to unhook hose and assemble a cleaning attachment, we simply vacuum entire house without interruption. Then we grab the handy little canister and hit areas big vacuum missed, under ledge at bottom of cabinets, corners, cobwebs, etc. The wife loves this routine and said it is actually way more logical and easier. The canister is a great little vac in its own right. It is NOT a shop vac. It's made for touch ups and small pickups. Great suction, telescoping handle. We clipped on board tools to handle of canister so they are very handy. Also all the attachments from old Wind Tunnel fit the canister. Wife uses the turbo tool to clean upholstery. I use the big machine to clean upholstery. It is light enough that I can hold it by the handle and a grab hold down by the head (see page 8 of owner's manual) and, holding unit horizontal, I give couches and chairs a serious deep clean. Someone said the canister is heavy. It weighs under 5 lbs, so seems very light to me and I'm no youngster. Someone else said the canister didn't have a handle. I can only guess they received a faulty hose. Our canister hose has a substantial handle and as stated it even telescopes. Ours installs into the canister with a solid click when turned clockwise and has never come loose. Another person complained that the cords are too long ! That was a first for me. I have read many reviews concerning appliances whose cords are too short, but never too long. We LOVE long cords. Go figure.
4) LED lights are vast improvement over light on the older vac.
5) Vacuumed daughter's house and tile floor and had no trouble on tile. Low speed was best for me and I learned not to move too fast and seemed to pick up loose things fine; little if any scattering. If you have delicate wood floors, bear in mind the brush roll doesn't turn off so a stick vac might be an excellent addition for the wood. If we need to move something while vacuuming, we just turn machine off with a simple touch of the thumb.
6) W.Mrt sells the bags. The are somewhat more expensive but are also huge, hepa, and of excellent quality. Best I have ever come across.
7) We love the retro look and just about everything else about this vacuum. Remember, some people would find something to criticize if you gave them a gold brick.
The wife says it's her favorite vacuum ever and,if I had not given it to her, she definitely would buy it again.

I was so excited to get my new vacuum that I had been researching for weeks. I have read review after review and now I'm thankful for them so I'm leaving one of my own to hopefully help someone else. I had been debating on a dyson or this Hoover for quite some time and decided to trust consumer reports and go with this model. i have about 50/50 carpet/hardwoods on my main level in my home and thought the canister would actually be a good idea to go around with on my wood floors and bathrooms etc. Sadly, I am returning this entire vacuum for a Dyson because the canister is such a piece of junk that I actually have to laugh instead of throwing a temper tantrum. it's not functional at all, the hose had absolutely NO handle while using it so you have to hold onto the hose itself which that alone will give you carpol tunnel (sp) and that is only in place by a 1/4 turn into the side of the canister unit so it comes off no less than 80% of the time and the other times, the end with the floor attachment comes off or is clogged. I'm so bummed that this is so bad but I can say if you only have carpets and don't need the canister, then the vacuum itself is great and works great on my regular low pile carpets. But, and sadly there is another one, my carpet in my family room is a newer long shag and only my husband is able to push this vacuum on that carpet. I have to use both hands, bend down and heave which is less than ok with me. so, I'll try the Dyson DC 17 Animal and see if it meets my expectations. I don't know how so many people rated this so highly with the canister on this unit.

Fast delivery of this product, thanks Amazon! This Hoover Platinum LBU is brand new and most new products usually perform perfectly unless received defective, I will update my review when I've had this for awhile. Now for first impressions. What I like about this and the reason I purchased is that it has aggressive bristles on its brushroll. It also exhausts its air thru the pores of the bag, a real plus in my opinion, I dislike the hardsided uprights because of their exhaust blast and the need for expensive additional filters. I have the Platinum Stick Vac which is used on the lighter-weight area rugs, the LBU is just too powerful to use on them (unless they're nailed down) even on its low setting. I can see where the brushroll may scratch very delicate flooring since the bristles are so stiff. You do need the stiffness to properly clean and groom carpet. The stick vac is perfect for bare flooring and touch-ups between regular cleanings. Can't beat this for its light weight and ease of handling! It's not overly loud either.
I won't be making any comments on the canister since I will either sell it or give it to a family member, I really have no use for it. It's combination dusting/upholstery brush is very nice, I will order another one of those for another cleaner. I don't know why this style of attachment wasn't changed sooner - I'd rather go side-to-side than forward-and-back.
The upright, as it is, is a very good design. Update to follow.

-lightweight, very easy to manuever, powerful suction,
-very substantial feeling,
-very clean functional design (The upright works superbly on stairs even)
-versatile shoulder-bag canister
-HEPA filters on both
-Its quiet enough that my cats just walk around it while its running, instead of running for cover.
-and VERY reasonable price
Platinum IS A WINNER IN EVERY AREA.
With the demise of Electrolux I had to face replacement PARTS costing MORE than buying this Hoover pair, Hoovers best upright and portable canister. Money is tight so I we took the chance on Hoover.
WOW !
Hoover really nailed this upright....
AND hit upon the perfect combination with this pair. The upright feels and works like it costs very much more. I balked at the cost of the filters but the uprights filter is huge AND its HEPA. I was unsure about the shouldered canister but after a few days its hard to see how we ever got along without one of these. Give that engineer a huge bonus.
My wife vacuums daily. Shes trashed 2 electroluxes in 12 years. She loves these two and so do I. If I get only a few years out of them will still save us hundreds over the premium vacuums that cost 3-4 times what this Hoover pair does.
WELL DONE HOOVER. Don't change a thing !!
